Career education is the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes through a planned program of learning experiences in education and training settings to assist students to make informed decisions about their study and/or work options and enable effective participation in working life.
Career education supports students to explore the world of work, identify career options and pathways, and build career management skills (for the purpose of this document, also known as career management competencies) and general capabilities. Career education includes work exploration, industry engagement and work-related curriculum (for the purpose of this document, this includes work-based learning) opportunities across all curriculum areas for all students.
The Requirements and Guidelines for Career Education delivered to school students and the Guiding Principles were endorsed by the Years 9 to 12 Steering Committee in February 2021.
Consultation on these and associated documents was undertaken with schools, as well as education, training and industry stakeholders, throughout 2020.
Supporting resources and professional learning to assist with implementation are being developed and will be provided to schools.
The Requirements and Guidelines provides guidance and parameters around the delivery and provision of career education to school students.
