The following sections provide an overview of how elements of planned programs of learning in Years 9-12 can continue to operate in the current COVID-19 situation.
This information aligns with the Department’s Return to school plan to managing COVID-19 in schools and early childhood education and care.
Apprenticeships including ASbAs
Apprenticeships and traineeships for school aged learners (ApTSL) will continue as normal with COVID-safe measures in place.
The ApTSL team will be available to DECYP schools to provide support/relief to School Facilitators regarding
- TCE projections for students
- liaising with the responsible school staff regarding student timetables/work pattern
- liaising with Apprenticeship Network Providers (ANP’S)
- parent and employer communications
- School Endorsement Form (SEF) approval process

Career Education
Career Education can be helpful to support young people through anxious times when they are unsure about their future. This can be helpful in supporting their wellbeing. Canvas resources are available for Students and teachers to make use of.

Graduate Certificate – Career Development
To support teaching and learning in term 1, the study of the Graduate Certificate – Career Development will pause for Term 1.
James Cook University are able to accommodate our current circumstances by allowing deferment of study for our staff enrolled in the Graduate Certificate – Career Development from Term 1 recommencing in Term 2, 2022.
Undertaking study in term 2, will allow:
- 2021 staff intake to graduate before the end of 2022
- 2022 staff intake to graduate at the end of Term 1 2023

Packages of Learning
All schools registered to offer Packages of Learning in 2022 will be contacted via email to:
- provide them with information on how to onboard class codes into the system; and
- request the names of the teachers teaching each of the packages at each centre.
- teachers will then be added to the relevant Community of Practice.
Recognised Formal Learning (GCSQs)
Six General Capabilities Short Qualifications (GCSQs) are available for enrolment for years 11 and 12 students.
The Short Qualifications are delivered for a duration of 20 hours and, upon successful completion, will contribute two credit points at Level 2 towards student’s Tasmanian Certificate of Education. If your school is considering or would like to deliver the one or more of the General Capabilities Short Qualifications, please complete this Expression of Interest Form.

VET Delivered in Schools
Students can undertake vocational /work placements associated with VET programs as normal provided all parties (students, parents and carers, schools, and workplaces) are supportive. It will be subject to normal procedures, including risk management and assessment practices and obtaining parental approval. Site requirements at the workplace will need to be considered.

Work-based Learning
Industry visitors may deliver work-based Learning activities onsite at the school but need approval from the Principal. Industry visitors must be vaccinated and should adhere to all COVID-safe practices.
Work-based Learning activities can occur outside of the school site. Activities can continue with COVID-safe measures in place. Students can continue to undertake work exposure, work experience internships and work placements provided all parties (students, parents and carers, schools, and workplaces) are supportive. It will be subject to normal procedures, including risk management and assessment practices and obtaining parental approval. Site requirements at the workplace will need to be considered.
